Blog Post Blueprint ~ Using WordPress

By Joyce Glass | Create

What elements create the perfect blog post?

#1 Create Great Content!

Provide value to your reader. Infuse illustrations, stories, and stats for more interest. Give simple instructions to big problems your readers may struggle with.

#2 Use A Headline Optimizer

You can see how well your title ranks by testing it at this link.

Enter your title at:

www.AMInstitute.com/headline

#3 Choose A Feature Image

You can have more than one image in your post, but the featured image needs to draw people into your content.

A few of my favorite places to find images:

www.Pixabay.com

www.FreeDigitalPhotos.net

OR Create your own images at:

www.Canva.com

I am creating a post soon about creating your own images, and some tricks I use. Be on the lookout!

#4 Format Your Post

Make it easy to read.

Subtitles:

  • Make them a different color which coordinates with your blog or logo colors.
  • Make it a size or two larger than your paragraphs. I prefer a 22 px or 24px.
  • Put one every 2-4 paragraphs to make your post easy to skim and read.

Paragraphs:

  • Please use a 14px to 18px size font on your post. It depends on the font which is best. I detest goign to a site or trying to read an email, and I need to enlarge the font to be able to read it comfortably. No, I don't need glasses... yet.
  • Remeber people are reading on handheld devices. If the font is too small to read, they will end up frustrated or leave.
  • My personal preference on a blog post is to "justify" my text verses "left justify," because it creates nice even rows down the post. A clean look and easy to read. Most people skim post, and this makes it easier when you format nicely. You may be skimming now! 😉

#5 Click To Tweet

There are various ways to create a Click To Tweet box.

  1. Click to Tweet Plugin - Search Plugins in WordPress
  2. I have Thrive Themes, and I can create the box below using the Thrive Builder - this is what I use to create my site and my blog post.

Your theme may have a special option to create a Click to Tweet box.
  3. You can create your own Click To Tweet link at: www.ClickToTweet.com
  4. Create a hyperlink for your Click To Tweet like this using wwww.ClickToTweet.com:
    [Click To Tweet]
  5. Use your twitter handle to be notified when someone tweets about your post.  Ex. @joyce_glass
  6. Use www.bitly.com to create a shorter link to place in your tweet.
  7. OR Use the plugin Pretty Link Lite (Search in WordPress plugins) to create custom shorter links Ex. www.TheWriteCoach.biz/Blueprint.

#6 Ask A Question

At the end of your post engage your audience with a question to start a conversation in the comments.

Put the question in a box. See my example  below.

Another option I use on my other blog is to center the text, make the font slightly larger than the paragraph text, and the same color as the subtitles.

#7 Share Buttons

Give you readers a chance to share your post.

Post Social Share Buttons at the end of your post like this.

Most likely your theme offers some kind of share button option. Also, Share This is a WordPress plugin you can download.
