Do Writers Need To Be On Social Media?

In a word, YES!

But why?

Some writers avoid this part of their writing business. It feels scary, overwhelming and complicated if you have not been on social media for marketing. Many writers dread and fear marketing. Marketing is not a bad word.

Build Relationships

Marketing in the simplest form builds relationships with people who may buy from you in the future. When you look through the lens of connecting with others to share your heart, ideas, or systems with them, then it feels more natural and comfortable. Well, for many it does. If you loathe self-promotion and marketing, change your perspective on this.

Did you write a book to share with the world? The world needs your genius! If you want to sell many books or grow your business with a book, you want to build an audience on social media, then feed them to your email list. I will share more about email list on another podcast. Remember, with an email list you have control over it.

The Gatekeepers

If you only build on your audience on social media, and ONLY have a group on Facebook, what will you do if Facebook changes up things and removes groups as an option (I don’t think this will happen anytime soon.) When social media changes the rules and their algorithms, it could mess up your connections. The social media platforms have their goals, and they do not always align with your goals. However, if you have an email list, you can keep going. You want to keep people engaged.

Each platform has ways to engage. You will need to learn them. For example, hashtags are very important on Instagram and Twitter, and I have noticed them on LinkedIn. On Facebook engagement is what moves you through the algorithms. You want to engage with others, and you want them to engage with you.

Take very small consistent steps, especially when you're starting out
you need to spend the majority of your time learning to write
and writing, but that does not exempt you from
the need to build a platform at the same time.

When Do Writers Need To Grow Their Audience?

NOW! If you are in the process of writing your book, you need to make some time to work on this part of your writing business. Writing a stellar book is important, but you want people to sell it to when you finish.

It starts with building excitement. The movie industry does this very well. They will promote upcoming movies months in advance, and sometimes a year in advance. Why? To build the excitement, create a buzz, and give the movie momentum from the moment it releases. You want to do the same thing for your book.
